The Rotary Club of Scarborough is celebrating its centenary during 2021/22. Formed in 1921, the Club has nearly 50 members and is enjoying a programme of events to help commemorate the milestone and to engage with the community.
The foundation for the Club’s year is ‘ROTARY100’ and involves a collaboration with the Scarborough YMCA, Scarborough and York Hospital Trust and St.Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough. The Club has set an ambitious fund raising target of £100,000,which will be split equally across the charities to help deliver three important capital projects which each organisation identified during the Centenary Year planning stage.
The Club calendar for the Centenary Year has included several public facing events including dinners, 100 tree planting, fairs and sporting venues. The Rotary roundel also sits proudly on show in the famous Peasholm Park in Scarborough which has raised the profile of the Club and Rotary generally. In turn this has generated interest in what Rotary is about and how people can get involved.
Nigel Wood, the President during the year said,” Our Centenary is a testament to the men and women in our town who have, over many years, served Rotary both here and elsewhere in the world. We are especially delighted to be linked with three locally based charities to help them to achieve projects which hopefully will help our community across the whole spectrum of ages and needs for many years to come. Recent times have been challenging to say the least but Rotarians have shown resilience throughout this and a number of major global occurrences since the Club was founded. We look forward with optimism to the future and to the next 100 years.”
