Scunthorpe Rotary partnership working to support fun family literacy kits

The Rotary Club of Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire Children's Literacy Trust, worked in partnership to bid into the ONGO community grant scheme earlier this year. ONGO are the largest housing provider in North Lincolnshire and neighbouring areas, offering quality, affordable homes for rent and sale. The grant funding was specifically to work with people living in the Westcliffe area.

Linda, Karen and Sue (Potter) have been actively involved

The application was successful and received the full £2000 from ONGO, plus our contribution of £500 and a further £250 from the Rotary Swimarathon. The Children's Literacy Trust and North Lincolnshire Council have supported in kind by providing staff time to manage to the project.
The money has been used to put together 115 Fun Family Literacy Kits, which have been distributed to Free School Meal families in Key Stage 1 at Westcliffe Primary School and Oasis Parkwood Primary School.
The kits are full of resources that will help families and children develop their communication, language and literacy skills at home, whilst having fun together. They include:
 *   Books
 *   Magazines
 *   Dictionaries
 *   Games
 *   Note Pads
 *   Pens/Pencils/Crayons/Scissors/Glue

The plan was to deliver some family workshops in schools, where the children and their parents/carers would come along, find out about the kits and have a play before taking them home. However due to the rise in Covid infection rates amongst school children locally, the schools took the decision to not allow parents in school for the rest of this term and therefore cancel our workshops plans. Following on from these kits going home families will be invited to join Emma Wilkinson and her team during the summer holidays for a family fun workshop at Ashby Community Hub. During these visit families will be encouraged to join and use the library, plus they will take part in some fun, active activities which will support developing their communication, language and literacy skills. These workshops will run from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a picnic lunch. They are scheduled for 18th, 19th, 25th & 26th August.
